What is a CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. CSAs develop partnerships between consumers and local farmers that mutually benefit both. Consumers typically buy a “share” (membership) for a specified length of time and receive fresh, seasonal, quality food directly from local farmers on a weekly basis.

Why should you become a CSA Member?

  • You will enjoy fresh, local foods with all the flavor and health benefits that fresh foods provide.
  • You will enjoy the convenience and variety of different foods delivered on a weekly basis.
  • You will have the opportunity to support local sustainable agriculture.
  • You will know how your food is produced and who produces it.

What are the specifics of the Shenandoah Farms CSA?

Our 2012 Winter CSA sign-up begins Friday, January 20, 2012, and continues through Friday, February 3, 2012. The Winter CSA product distribution begins Tuesday February 14, 2012 and continues through Thursday April 5, 2012.

Please sign up early to help us better schedule your CSA membership.

Our CSA consists of products from our farm and other local farmers and producers. This approach offers you a wider range of products rarely found in the typical CSA. We, as with our participating farmers and producers, use sustainable earth friendly practices. All prepared foods are produced in an approved Virginia Department of Agriculture kitchen and we use meats raised without the use of growth hormones, antibiotics or animal-by-products. *If you prefer all vegetarian products, just let us know.

There are 2 Levels of Shares that you may choose from:

  1. Family – An ample amount of produce and local artisanal foods suitable for 2 – 3 folks dedicated to eating at home or 4 – 5 folks who eat away from home and at home.

  2. Single/Couple – A suitable selection for 1 – 2 folks who eat at home.

Our Winter CSA brings to your home a beautiful selection of produce from our year-round greenhouses along with cold weather produce and artisanal foods. Here is a sample of the selections from which we will choose your Winter share:

  • Salad Greens such as Hydroponic Bibb Lettuce, Watercress, Asian Mix, Arugula and Red Leaf Lettuce
  • Hydroponic (with REAL tomato flavor) Cherry Tomatoes and Beefsteak Tomatoes
  • English Cucumbers and Living Hydroponic Basil
  • Apples
  • Potatoes
  • Local Artisanal foods
  • Early season cold-weather vegetables such as kale, radishes and greens
  • Homemade foods such as pesto, basil butter, pimento cheese, bread, rolls, cheese, etc.

We will offer a choice of two (2) additional options that we think will enhance your Family or Single/Couple share.

  • Egg Share: Choose either a dozen or multiples of a dozen at $3.50/dz or half dozen at $1.75 per week
  • Entrée Option: The Family Share will receive 2 quarts or the equivalent and the Single/Couple share will receive 1 quart or the equivalent. We offer vegetarian and gluten-free entrees; just let us know. Many have found the prepared entrée a big help in making the preparation of a meal easier. Examples of the entrée menu are:
  • Beef Stew
  • Sweet Potato Soup
  • Beef or Buffalo Chili
  • Hearty Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Cheeseburger Soup
  • Coconut Curry Butternut Soup

Our CSA has been very well received by previous participants. We realize our future success is dependent upon the quality of our foods and our service. We encourage you to talk with friends who have previously participated in our CSA and to call or email us with questions.

We strive for 100% customer satisfaction and invite you to contact us via email or phone with any feedback.

We encourage you to complete the CSA application on or before Friday, February 3, 2012.
